IRFU Launch Facilities and Event Planning Guide for Clubs

November 13th, 2008 by admin0 | 1 Comment | Filed in Irish Rugby

As part of the commitment to deliver quality at all levels of rugby in Ireland, the Irish Rugby Football Union today announced details of the new Facilities and Event Planning Guide for Clubs.

The guide contains all of the necessary guidelines and support for clubs to ensure a quality environment for players, supporters and volunteers including clubhouse amenities, weight training/gym facilities, floodlighting & pitch standards and event management safety standards.

This guide highlights the essential areas required for the organisation and development of rugby clubs and is just one of the latest initiatives in line with the IRFU’s recent strategic plan to develop a quality game both on and off pitch.

The guide is designed to be a support resource for rugby clubs, with key contact information and direction on sourcing service providers to enable the delivery of the best playing environment and experience for rugby club members at all levels of the game in Ireland.

Speaking about this initiative, Finbarr Crowley, Chairman of Domestic Game Committee said “Our ambition is to provide quality at all levels of the game to continue to build on the foundations of the domestic game, which is the key area for the success of Irish Rugby. This guide is a step towards achieving this goal. For a club to be sustainable it must be managed like any small business, this is a holistic guide for clubs to achieve a quality club environment.”

This guide will be delivered to all clubs in Ireland within the coming weeks and will be also supplemented with the support structure in place through the club development managers in each of the provinces.

Should Brian O’Driscoll still be Irish Captain?

October 31st, 2008 by admin0 | No Comments | Filed in Irish Rugby

Declan Kidney has named his squad for the forthcoming international series with the Southern Hemisphere rugby powerhouses and also against Canada, As part of the squad he has named Brian O’Driscoll as captain.

O’Driscoll has been leading Irish Rugby for a number seasons, he has though missed a number of tests over recent times through injury.

Has the time arrived for him to step aside and try to regain the wonderful form he showed a number of years ago while free of the captaincy. If O’Driscoll needs to be replaced then by whom? The obvious choice would be Paul O’Connell of Young Munster and Munster.

This is part of the problem that Kidney faces, Paul O’Connell has himself had some sketchy matches for the Irish and perhaps Kidney believes he is not quite up to the job. There is not really anyone else that Kidney could turn to withreal confidence and until he finds that certain someone it looks like O’Driscoll will keep the role.

Ulster Branch Feature: Regional Development Squads (RDS)

October 20th, 2008 by admin0 | No Comments | Filed in Irish Rugby

As the Ulster Branch Under 16 and Under 17 clubs’ Regional Development Squads enter into the next phase of their season, we caught up with Ulster Branch Regional Development Officer, Jamie Turkington to get the low down on what exactly the RDS programme involves.

Jamie, can you tell us a bit about the RDS programme?
The Regional Development Squad (clubs’) programme was established by the IRFU (Ulster Branch) as the stepping- stone to representative rugby in Ulster. Based on an age-grade structure, its aim is to develop youth rugby in the province at the appropriate age groups and to identify and support young players for future selection by Ulster and Irish Youth representative teams. The programme also provides a means of identifying and supporting players for inclusion in the Ulster Academy, and ultimately the professional game, as well as identifying and supporting coaches and managers for further representative squads.

Can you explain exactly how the RDS programme operates?
Under the RDS structure, players are broken down into 2 age groups: under 16 and under 17, and then further divided by geographical region. There are currently 4 regional-based U16 squads, which are made up of players from club youth and high schools’ teams. The U16 squads operate from October through to March.

The Under 17 RDS consists of 2 squads split into East and West, each containing 35 players. Both squads operate from June through to April each year, and then at this stage, players are selected for the provisional Ulster Youth squad for the following season.

Squads generally meet once a month for coaching sessions, which are taken by Ulster Branch-appointed volunteer coaches and managers. The coaches deliver programmes that have been developed by Rugby Development staff in line with the IRFU’s Long-term Player Development Model.

The early sessions focus on improving strength and conditioning among the players, with some work based around skill development. We have been lucky to have the support of Calor, who, as well as sponsoring the Under18 Youth team, support the Strength and Conditioning programme for the clubs’ RDS. This sponsorship has given us the necessary resources to be able to bring in qualified strength and conditioning coaches to work with our players and educate them on the standards required to play at a higher level. We will be holding an Education day at the end of October, which will see players and coaches come together for specialist workshops from guest coaches.

As the season progresses, while conditioning still remains important, there will be more emphasis placed on skill development to prepare the teams for the final selection process.

Can you tell us a bit more about the Education Day at the end of October?
The RDS Education day takes place on Sunday 26th October in the high-performance unit at the University of Ulster Jordanstown, and its aim is to provide our under 17 age grade players with a practical opportunity to gain new skills from experienced coaches who have worked with age-grade representative teams and professional players. It will also provide a platform for invited coaches, allowing them to ‘up skill’ and continue their professional development. The support from Calor has allowed us to put together a comprehensive programme for the day, and the event is definitely something we would like to run on an annual basis in the future as part of our overall Coach Development Programme in Ulster.
